Cleaning Our Oceans
The Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch nonprofit dedicated to reducing plastic pollution in the world’s oceans, continued to make progress in January 2026 by scaling up its efforts to remove debris from marine environments and prevent more plastic from entering the seas. Building on years of innovation, the organization has developed large 600-meter floating cleanup systems that use ocean currents and natural forces to corral and collect plastic waste from areas like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - a region where plastics accumulate due to circulating currents. These systems, part of a broader strategy that also includes river interceptors to stop plastic at its source, have helped The Ocean Cleanup and its partners remove tens of millions of kilograms of plastic from rivers and oceans globally, marking one of the most significant technological efforts to restore ocean health to date.

International Treaty Now Protects Oceans
On January 17, 2026, the United Nations High Seas Treaty -formally the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity Beyond National Jurisdiction -officially entered into force, marking a historic milestone in global ocean protection. After nearly two decades of negotiations and reaching the required threshold of ratification by over 60 countries, this treaty provides the first legally binding international framework to conserve biodiversity and sustainably manage the ocean areas that lie beyond any single nation’s control - a vast region covering about two-thirds of the world’s oceans. The treaty enables countries to work together to create marine protected areas, require environmental impact assessments for activities that could harm ocean ecosystems, and promote fair global cooperation in sharing marine genetic resources and capacity-building. This landmark agreement is widely celebrated as a turning point for ocean conservation and multilateral cooperation, offering a much-needed legal foundation to address threats like overfishing, pollution, and biodiversity loss in international waters.

Nightjar Rediscovered
An elusive and extremely rare nightjar was rediscovered in a Belfast street, giving conservationists and bird lovers a reason to celebrate. The nightjar - a secretive nocturnal bird with very few sightings in Northern Ireland since the 1950s - was found behind a bin on Lisburn Road by office workers who initially thought it might be a bird of prey. They contacted wildlife rescuer Debbie Nelson (also known as “Debbie Doolittle”), who confirmed the bird’s identity and highlighted how unusual the encounter was given the species’ rarity in the region. Nelson described the rescue as her most special of 2025, underscoring both the surprise and joy of finding such a rare visitor alive and well.

Reversing Paralysis
Doctors at NYU Langone Health reported what may be the first real-world reversal of paralysis in a child with a rare mitochondrial disorder caused by HPDL deficiency, a condition that disrupts cells’ ability to make vital coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). By administering a precursor to CoQ10 - a smaller molecule the body can more easily convert into the coenzyme - the experimental treatment helped an 8-year-old boy regain motor function he had lost, enabling him to walk long distances again and even run within two months of beginning therapy. This remarkable case, published as part of a broader study in Nature, highlights a promising new direction in treating serious neurological conditions where previous options were nonexistent.

Hubble Found Starless “Failed Galaxy”
Astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope confirmed the existence of a truly remarkable cosmic object nicknamed “Cloud-9” - a starless, gas-rich cloud dominated by dark matter that appears to be a “failed galaxy”. Unlike typical galaxies that contain billions of stars, Cloud-9 contains no stars at all, despite having abundant neutral hydrogen gas held together by a massive dark matter halo, consistent with long-standing cosmological theories that predicted such relics from the early Universe. This object falls into a class known as Reionization-Limited H I Clouds (RELHICs), representing a primordial building block of structure that captured gas but never ignited star formation, providing a rare observational window into the dark side of cosmic evolution and the nature of dark matter halos.

SleepFM
Researchers at Stanford Medicine unveiled a groundbreaking artificial intelligence system called SleepFM that could transform preventive healthcare by analyzing a single night’s sleep data to assess long-term health risks. By training the AI on nearly 600,000 hours of detailed sleep recordings, SleepFM learns complex patterns in brain activity, heart rhythms, breathing, and other physiological signals and can predict the risk of developing more than 100 different diseases, including major conditions such as cancer, heart disease, dementia, and pregnancy complications, years before symptoms typically appear. This approach suggests that sleep - long studied mainly for disorders like apnea - may contain a wealth of early warning signs for serious illnesses, offering clinicians new tools to identify risks and intervene sooner.
